After years of dreaming, Mike and Rhonda brought us their brand-new Toyota Hiace ZX straight from the dealership, with a clear vision in mind: a comfortable, practical campervan layout that could handle both weekend getaways and longer trips around Aotearoa. What started as a conversation about layout adjustments soon evolved into a full custom campervan conversion designed with care, tested over summer, and fine-tuned with personal touches that make it truly theirs.
The Base Vehicle
With its practical proportions, smooth driving experience, and open two-seat cabin, the Toyota Hiace ZX is perfectly suited for a comfortable campervan conversion. It offers a 2.8L turbo diesel engine paired with a smooth 6-speed automatic transmission, making it powerful yet efficient for long trips.
The Design Brief
Mike works just around the corner from our workshop in Wairau Valley, so we had the benefit of plenty of in-person catchups. His goals were simple but specific:
-
Benches that convert into a bed
-
A two-part kitchen: a central island bench behind the passenger seat, and a full-length unit along the driver’s side
-
Large under-seat storage, smart electrical upgrades, and certified gas and water systems
-
A removable centre unit for flexible space usage
-
Zero holes cut in the van body unless absolutely necessary
We also installed a full self-containment system, upgraded to a 240Ah AGM battery, and built the cabinetry using sealed birch ply with a white HPL benchtop finish.
Custom Touches
Mike and Rhonda selected a 49L 12V fridge / freezer, which we installed with a precise cabinetry cut-out. Curtains were custom-made with a combination of magnets and suction cups. For upholstery, they opted for premium squabs, though we later swapped out some panels and altered the cushion zips to suit their preferences.
Another key addition was the MaxxFan Deluxe Roof Vent. With its 10-speed fan and rain sensor, it’s a game-changer for comfort on warm nights.

Collaboration & Follow-Up
We always appreciate working with clients who are engaged in the process, and Mike was exactly that. From amateur sketches of a coffee holder (which we happily CNC’d) to chilled beers dropped off for our gas fitter, the entire journey was collaborative and good-natured. After a summer of travel, Mike summed it up perfectly:
"We had a great time in the van, no issues at all." — Mike Cross
Cheers to that.
