The thinner cousin of our popular 10mm foam, the 5mm version is purpose-built for the tight spots in a van build — wheel arches, bodywork contours, ribs, and any area where the 10mm is too bulky. Same closed-cell EVA construction, same waterproof self-adhesive system, just half the thickness for maximum flexibility.

Benefits:
• Closed-cell construction — waterproof, won't absorb condensation or moisture.
• Thinner profile fits into tight ribs, wheel arches, and complex curves.
• Self-adhesive backing bonds directly to bare metal — no additional glue required.
• Highly flexible — wraps around compound curves without creasing.
• Deadens vibration and rattles from van body panels.
• Easy to cut with scissors or a Stanley knife.

Features:
The 5mm foam is ideal when space is the limiting factor. It conforms to the tightest sections of a Transit or Sprinter — the corrugated floor channels, the curved side walls, the tight radius wheel arches — where the 10mm would buckle or leave gaps. Many Vanlifer builds use both: 5mm on the complex shapes and ribs, 10mm on the flat runs. The 81kg/m³ density gives it good acoustic performance for such a thin material. Combine with GreenStuf insulation in deeper cavities and Caribbean Hull Liner as your final finish layer.

People are asking

What is the difference between the 5mm and 10mm foam?

Both are the same closed-cell EVA foam with the same self-adhesive backing — the only difference is thickness. The 5mm is better suited to tight spaces, wheel arches, intricate bodywork contours, and areas where the 10mm would be too bulky. The 10mm gives slightly better thermal and acoustic performance and suits flat panels. Many builds use both — 5mm on curves and complex shapes, 10mm on flat surfaces.

How much foam do I need for a full van build?

A full mid-size van (e.g. Ford Transit or Mercedes Sprinter) typically uses 15-25 square metres of foam across walls, floor, ceiling, and doors. A single roll of our 5mm foam covers a significant portion of this. Most builders use a combination of foam for the flat and curved surfaces, plus GreenStuf insulation in the deeper wall and ceiling cavities for bulk thermal performance.

Can I use this foam on the van floor?

Yes, but we recommend the 10mm foam for floors as it provides better underfoot cushioning and insulation from the cold metal. Apply the foam directly to the metal floor, then lay your subfloor boards on top. The closed-cell structure also means any moisture from condensation on the metal floor won't soak into the foam.
