What should I bring to the inspection?

How long is the Green Warrent Self Containment valid for?

The certification is valid for 4 years from the date of issue.

Can you certify all types of campervans and motorhomes?

Yes! We can certify a wide range of self-contained vehicles. If you have any specific concerns, feel free to contact us.

When do I have to upgrade from a Blue self-containment to a Green Warrant?

If your vehicle was issued a Blue self-containment certificate before 7 June 2024, it's valid until either its expiry date or 7 June 2026, whichever comes first. After that, you must have a Green Warrant to legally freedom camp in most public places across New Zealand.

To upgrade, your campervan must meet the new requirements, including a fixed toilet, and be inspected by an authorised Green Warrant certifier.

Can Vanlifer get my van up to self-containment standard if it fails?

Yes, absolutely. If your van doesn’t meet the requirements during the inspection, we can work with you to make the necessary upgrades or changes to bring it up to green warrant standards. Whether it's adding a compliant toilet, adjusting water storage, or updating ventilation, our team can handle it.

We aim to make every self-containment inspection clear, fair, and straightforward. If you have a concern about your inspection, certification outcome, or any part of the process, please let us know and we’ll work with you to resolve it.

How to raise a complaint

Email (info@vanlifer.com) or call us (0800 826 5433) with:

  • Your full name and best contact number
  • Your vehicle registration (or VIN if not registered yet)
  • The date of your inspection
  • A short description of the issue
  • Any photos or documents that might help

What happens next

  • We’ll acknowledge your complaint within 5 working days
  • We’ll review the inspection records and supporting documentation, and investigate the issue thoroughly
  • We’ll respond in writing within 20 working days wherever possible
  • If the matter is complex and needs more time, we’ll let you know what’s happening and why

Depending on what we find, outcomes may include:

  • Clarifying or explaining an inspection decision
  • Correcting an error (if one is identified)
  • Re-inspecting or requesting further evidence where appropriate
