Vertical Space That Slide-Outs Can't Match

The HappiJac Power Bed Lift is the original vertical-lift alternative to a slide-out — instead of pushing a wall outward, it moves your bed straight up out of the way, freeing the full floor below for ATVs, motorbikes, gear, or simply a bigger living area. It's the go-to solution for toy haulers and fifth-wheelers that need double-duty space without the cost and complexity of a slide mechanism.

Vanlifer supplies and installs the HappiJac Power Bed Lift in Auckland — so unlike a parts-only import, you're getting a system that's been fitted and tested by a team that builds campervans and toy hauler interiors for a living.

Why Choose a HappiJac Power Bed Lift

  • Reclaim the garage floor — raise the bed fully out of the way for ATVs, bikes, or gear, then lower it back for double queen sleeping at night
  • One-button operation — no pins, latches, or manual cranking in normal use; flip the switch and the direct-drive motor does the rest
  • Stops at any height — not just up or down, so you can set sofa height, dinette height, or full sleeping height
  • Self-contained track system — the lift mechanism is fully enclosed, so there's nothing loose to rattle or wear on the road
  • Manual override built in — if power ever fails, the bed can be hand-cranked up or down so you're never stuck
  • Pre-assembled frame units — faster, more reliable install than building a lift mechanism from loose parts

See It In Action

See the lift raise and lower a bunk in real time, including how the control switch and stow feature work day-to-day.

Configuration Options

The lower trolley isn't locked into one layout:

  • Double queen bunk — two beds, upper and lower, for maximum sleeping capacity
  • Single bed — one platform, with the upper trolley left off entirely
  • Bed over sofa/dinette — the lower trolley can carry a sofa or dinette bracket instead of a bed platform, so seating rises and lowers the same way a bed does (the seating frame needs its own proper support legs — the bracket isn't rated to carry furniture weight alone)

The upper bunk also has a stow feature: it can be locked at full ceiling height while the lower bunk is set to a usable height underneath, giving you a garage-height opening without fully removing the top bed.

Installation & Fitment

This is a specialist install — it involves structural mounting into properly backed walls, motor and limit-switch wiring, and setting travel limits correctly so the bed seats and locks safely for road use. Vanlifer's team fits HappiJac bed lifts as part of full toy hauler and campervan builds, or as a standalone install if you already have a base vehicle. Talk to us before ordering if you're not sure whether your layout suits a double-queen configuration, a single bed, or a sofa/dinette setup.

A full third-party installation walkthrough, useful background if you want to see the process before your fit-out — our install manuals and wiring diagrams are also available below.

Using It Safely

  • Always raise the bed(s) fully before towing, to avoid bounce damage in transit
  • Never travel with anything other than bedding on the platform — loose items can become projectiles
  • Never operate the lift with anyone on the bed platform
  • Check that all four corner locking pins are fastened before towing or using the bed(s)
  • Keep the area above, below, and beside the bed clear of people and obstructions while it's moving

Maintenance

The system needs very little upkeep. Keep the vertical trolley channels free of dirt and debris, and apply a light silicone spray to the inner rail surfaces occasionally — this keeps operation quiet and reduces current draw. No other regular servicing is required.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can it be retrofitted into an existing van, trailer, or toy hauler?
In most cases yes, provided there's enough structural mounting point and headroom for the trolley travel. Send us your internal dimensions and we'll confirm fit before you order.

Does it include the bed platform, mattress, or cushions?
No — the lift is the mechanism only. We can build a platform to suit your bed size as part of the install.

Can the bed be stopped part-way, not just fully up or down?
Yes — it can be stopped and used at any height within its travel range, not only the two end positions.

Is professional installation required?
We strongly recommend it, given the structural mounting and wiring involved. Vanlifer installs HappiJac bed lifts in-house in Auckland, or we can supply with detailed fitting guidance for your own installer.

What's the lead time, and is it held in stock in NZ?
This is an imported item, so lead time depends on current stock on hand. Contact us before locking in a build schedule and we'll confirm availability and timing.

What's the weight capacity?
Each platform attachment is rated to 272 kg (600 lbs) static and 204 kg (450 lbs) dynamic (moving) load. This covers the lift mechanism only — the platform or furniture attached to it is rated separately.

What happens if the power fails while the bed is up?
There's a manual crank override at the top of the front C-channels. Unplug the motor, release the brake, and turn the crank point with a 1/2" hex socket wrench to move the bed by hand — easiest with two people, one on each side.

Can it run a sofa or dinette instead of a bed?
Yes. The lower trolley accepts a sofa/dinette bracket in place of a bed tab. The seating frame needs its own proper support legs — the bracket isn't rated to carry furniture weight on its own.

How much power does it draw?
Around 8A raising a single bed, up to 12A raising two beds together, on a 12V DC supply — worth allowing for in your electrical and fusing plan.

What wall backing do I need before installing it?
Solid backing of at least 3 mm (1/8") aluminium tube or timber built into the wall structure, sized to carry the rated platform load. This needs to be planned into the build before the rails go in.

The bed won't move, or only moves one direction — what should I check first?
Most no-movement faults trace back to power supply, a faulty limit switch, or the control switch. One-direction-only faults are usually a limit switch or the brake not releasing. We can talk you through it, or handle it directly if we installed your system.

Do I need to do anything to maintain it?
Very little — keep the trolley channels free of debris and give the inner rails an occasional light silicone spray. No other servicing is needed under normal use.

Is it safe to travel with the bed lift raised or lowered?
Always raise the bed(s) fully before towing to avoid bounce damage, and never travel with anything other than bedding on the platform. Confirm the locking pins are fitted at all four corners before you head off.

Warranty & Support

Backed by HappiJac/Lippert's manufacturer warranty, plus Vanlifer's local support and installation expertise if anything needs adjusting after fitment. Note that using the system for anything other than its intended purpose as a bed lift — including carrying cargo other than bedding, or riding on the platform — voids the manufacturer warranty.

People are asking

Can the HappiJac Power Bed Lift be retrofitted into an existing van, trailer, or toy hauler?

In most cases yes, provided there is enough structural mounting point and headroom for the trolley travel. Send us your internal dimensions and vehicle details and we will confirm fit before you order.

Does the bed lift include the bed platform, mattress, or cushions?

No, the HappiJac unit is the lift mechanism only, including the rails, motor and control switch. Vanlifer can design and build a matching bed platform to suit your layout as part of your installation.

Can the bed be stopped part-way, not just fully up or fully down?

Yes. The lift can be stopped and used at any height within its travel range, which is useful for setting sofa, dinette, or partial storage heights, not only the two end positions.

Is professional installation required?

We strongly recommend it. Fitting involves structural mounting, motor wiring and setting travel limits correctly so the bed seats and locks safely for road use. Vanlifer installs HappiJac bed lifts in-house in Auckland, or we can supply with detailed fitting guidance for your own installer.

What is the lead time, and is this unit held in stock in New Zealand?

This is an imported item, so lead time depends on current stock on hand. Contact us before locking in a build schedule and we will confirm availability and timing for your order.

What is the weight capacity of the bed lift?

Each platform attachment is rated to 272 kg (600 lbs) static load and 204 kg (450 lbs) dynamic load while moving. This rating covers the lift mechanism only — the bed platform, mattress, or furniture attached to it must be assessed separately, since HappiJac does not manufacture or rate those attachments.

What happens if the power fails while the bed is up?

The system has a manual crank override at the top of the front C-channels. Unplug the motor, release the brake lever, then turn the cranking point with a 1/2 inch hex socket wrench to raise or lower the bed by hand. It's easiest with two people, one on each side.

Can it run a sofa or dinette instead of a bed?

Yes. The lower trolley accepts an alternate sofa/dinette bracket instead of a standard bed tab, so the same lift can raise and lower a seating area rather than a bed. Note the sofa or dinette frame must have its own proper support legs — the bracket is not designed to bear furniture weight on its own.

How much power does the bed lift draw?

The system runs on 12V DC and draws approximately 8 amps when raising a single bed, or up to 12 amps when raising two beds together. Worth allowing for in your electrical and fusing plan.

What wall backing do I need before installing it?

The C-channel rails need to fix into solid backing — a minimum of 3 mm (1/8 inch) aluminium tube or timber built into the wall structure — to safely support the rated platform load. This needs to be planned into the build before the rails go in.

The bed won't move, or only moves one direction — what should I check first?

Most no-movement faults trace back to power, a faulty limit switch, or the control switch itself. If it moves in one direction but not the other, it's usually a limit switch or the brake not releasing. We can talk you through the diagnostic steps, or handle it directly if we installed your system.

Do I need to do anything to maintain it?

Very little. Keep the vertical trolley channels free of dirt and debris, and an occasional light application of silicone spray on the inner rail surfaces keeps it running quietly and reduces current draw. No other servicing is needed under normal use.

Is it safe to travel with the bed lift raised or lowered?

Always raise the bed(s) to the full up position before towing to avoid bounce damage, and never travel with anything other than bedding on the platform — loose items can become projectiles. Confirm the locking pins are fitted at all four corners before you head off.
