What does the Smart BatteryProtect actually do?

It's a low-voltage disconnect that sits between your battery and your non-essential 12V loads (lighting, fridge, USB outlets, etc.). When the battery voltage drops to your set threshold — indicating it's getting low — the BatteryProtect disconnects those loads automatically, preventing the battery from being fully discharged. It reconnects when the battery is charged back up past a higher threshold. This prevents deep discharge damage that shortens battery lifespan, particularly in lead-acid batteries which can be permanently damaged by a single deep discharge.

Can I set my own disconnect voltage with the Smart BatteryProtect?

Yes — via the VictronConnect app over Bluetooth, you can set custom engage and disengage voltage thresholds to suit your battery chemistry. Alternatively, use the manual programming pin to cycle through nine factory-preset voltage options without a phone. Typical lithium (LiFePO4) disconnect voltage is around 11.8–12.0V; lead-acid around 11.5–12.0V depending on how conservatively you want to protect it.

Does the Smart BatteryProtect work with lithium batteries?

Yes — it works with 12V and 24V lithium (LiFePO4), AGM, gel and flooded lead-acid batteries. For lithium systems, the BatteryProtect is often used as an additional safety layer alongside the battery's built-in BMS. Set the disconnect voltage to match your lithium battery's low-voltage cutoff recommendation. Is the Smart BatteryProtect unidirectional — can current only flow one way?

Yes — the Smart BatteryProtect is a unidirectional device. Current can only flow in one direction: from the IN terminal to the OUT terminal. This means it cannot be used in-line between a charger output and a battery (charger would be on IN, battery on OUT — reverse of the load-protection use case).
